New CNNIC Domain Name Registration Rules Released

After being filed with and approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the "China Internet Network Information Centre Internet Domain Name Registration Rules (2012)" have been released by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC) with effect as of 29 May 2012 to replace the 2009 edition, which was implemented on 5 June 2009. The key amendments in the 2012 edition include: (1) the scope of applicants for domain name registration has been expanded to natural persons; (2) a new chapter has been inserted to govern the protection of the information inserted into the domain name registration so as to better protect the information of registrants; and (3) the 30-day renewal period will start automatically after the expiry of the domain name registration. If the user fails to pay the renewal fee, the domain name registration service provider shall have the right to cancel the registration of the domain name in question after the renewal period.
